Product Liability

Consumers are protected against defective products by the Consumer Protection Act 1987 which gives you the right to claim compensation if a defect in a product has caused injury.
Cases currently and recently investigated by the unit include:

  • Trilucent breast implants.
  • Hydrogel breast implants.
  • Cosmetic fillers such as dermalive and bio-alcamid.
  • Hip prostheses.
  • Elbow prostheses.
  • Heart valves.
  • Heart pacemakers.
  • Contraceptive devices.
  • Intraocular lenses.
  • Allografts.
  • Vaccines.
  • PIP LPM finger prostheses.
  • Zyprexa.
  • Pergolide.

Many of these are medical devices or medicines but the law is equally applicable to household items and foods if we can show that they were not as safe as persons generally were entitled to expect.
