Victory for Treasury in tax avoidance battle

New threat to large companies and organisations

Large taxpayers in the region are being urged to review VAT avoidance schemes in the wake of recent landmark decisions by Europe’s highest court.

The European Court of Justice ruled in three connected cases involving Halifax, BUPA and the University of Huddersfield, that transactions carried out for the sole purpose of obtaining an artificial VAT advantage were an abuse of the tax system.
