Freeth Cartwright lawyer on a mission to Africa
FREETH CARTWRIGHT LAWYER ON A MISSION TO AFRICA
A Leicester solicitor at the region’s premier law firm will soon be swapping his hectic working day for helping deprived communities in Cape Town, South Africa.
Senior associate Robert Rushton, a medico-legal specialist at Freeth Cartwright, will spend three weeks in June as a volunteer for African Impact, an organisation that runs a number of projects throughout the year across the African continent.
The 33-year-old dad-of-two will be carrying out various hands-on tasks, including helping to paint community buildings, supporting teachers in local schools, and helping to run healthcare clinics.
Robert (pictured) commented: “This is the first time I have done something like this but I feel that it is something I want to do. When you are career-focused, it’s good to be able to stand back sometimes and help people who are less fortunate than you.
“I really think that this will be a life-changing experience for me. It’s three weeks out of my holiday entitlement and I am paying to do it but it’s hardly a sacrifice when you think about the lives of some of the people I will be helping.”
The money that Robert has paid to do the trip will be put into projects in Cape Town and he will have the weekends free to explore. Robert has the backing of his wife, Louise, his two young children, and from Julian Middleton, the managing partner at Freeth Cartwright’s Leicester office.
Julian commented: “Lawyers do lead very busy lives, with the pressures of deadlines and cases. It’s great that Robert has decided that, for three weeks, he will use his holiday to help improve the lives of people in one of the most deprived communities of South Africa.”
