SEMINARS TO HELP BUSINESSES FIGHT TOUGH ECONOMIC CONDITIONS 

A sharp increase in the number of enquiries as to how businesses can better trade in difficult economic conditions has prompted law firm Freeth Cartwright to organise seminars on the subject.

Issues such as ownership of goods, cash collection, restructuring, TUPE and directors duties will be on the agenda at the Trading in Difficult Times seminars, due to take place in Nottingham and Leicester over the coming months.

In this edition we cover The Rating (Empty Properties) Act 2007 which removed business rates relief for most unoccupied properties with effect from 1 April 2008; the Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) which is a certificate containing information about the energy efficiency of a building; a case concerning the right to enfranchise under the Leasehold Reform Act 1967 (LRA), where the House of Lords decided that a property, which had originally been designed as a house but later used commercially, was a “house” for the purposes of enfranchisement under the LRA; discharge of covenant imposed for planning purposes and finally Landlord and Tenant - Recovery of Service Charge.

FOOD UPDATE - July 2008

Welcome to our latest update for the food industry. You will find a snapshot of some of the key legal developments facing businesses in the food sector.

For those of you that employ temporary labour, agreement has finally been reached on legislation covering the rights of agency workers. We are interested to hear from you on the average length of time you employ agency workers and whether the 12 week period agreed is reasonable.

FREETH CARTWRIGHT RISES TO THE CHALLENGE AT GREAT NOTTS BIKE RIDE

Law firm Freeth Cartwright has praised the endurance of the teams who entered its inaugural Great Notts Bike Ride (GNBR) Corporate Challenge.

The business community of the East Midlands came together on June 22 to cycle in blustery conditions to raise in excess of £15,000 for the five nominated charities: Marie Curie Cancer Care; Cerebral Palsy Sport; When You Wish Upon A Star; Rainbows Hospice, and the Geoff Thomas Foundation.
