Employment Tribunal statistics released today
EMPLOYMENT TRIBUNAL STATISTICS RELEASED TODAY
The Employment Tribunal and Employment Appeal Tribunal (EAT) 2008-09 statistics have been published today.
Julian Middleton, employment specialist and managing partner at the Leicester office of regional law firm Freeth Cartwright said: “The statistics bear out what we have anecdotally known for some time - the number of claims is on the increase despite the Government’s efforts to reduce them - and that there are more unfair dismissal and redundancy related claims, generally as a result of the economic downturn.”
Key findings from the report include:
The figures show an overall increase of 20% in the number of claims brought.
There was a significant increase in the number of Unfair Dismissal claims together with redundancy pay and race discrimination claims.
There was a decrease in the number of sex discrimination, equal pay and working time claims.
The highest award was in a race discrimination case at over £1.35million.
There were 21 age discrimination claims heard with an average award of £8k.
For the first time, the EAT rejected over 50% of all appeals without a full hearing.
