The Food Information Regulation - January 2012

The Food Information Regulation (”the Regulation”) was finally published in December 2011. The Regulation is to be binding in its entirety and directly applicable to all Member states. It applies to food business operators at all stages of the food chain, where their activities concern the provision of food information to consumers, including food intended for supply to mass caterers.

What is this?

The Government is pursuing a deregulation agenda. The Prime Minister has stated that his Government’s aim is to be the first in modern history to leave office having reduced the overall burden of regulation rather than having increased it.

There is a general consultation covering the following: employment law; pensions; company law; equalities; health and safety and environment legislation. Departments will be expected to comment on these every four months.

In addition there are a series of sector-specific campaigns and the Government has chosen Hospitality, Food and Drink as one of the first sectors for its “Red Tape Challenge” to cut unnecessary regulation.

Welcome to our latest update for the food industry. You will find a snapshot of some of the key legal developments facing businesses in the food sector.

For those of you that employ temporary labour, agreement has finally been reached on legislation covering the rights of agency workers. We are interested to hear from you on the average length of time you employ agency workers and whether the 12 week period agreed is reasonable.
